This patent suggests that NFTs could be played and transferred between games and future metaverses. Allowing players to benefit in multiple games. The patent proposes enhancing game functionality by enabling exclusive use of assets and transferring their rights via NFT.
Sony suggests using NFTs to provide specific benefits to select players, such as rewarding the “first” to beat a boss in a game with a special NFT that grants a unique weapon or reward. However, it’s unclear how this would be fair with early access for influencers and press.
The patent also suggests minting a certain level, score, or points accumulation in a game that can be transferred or sold via NFT. This will result in allowing players to advance their gameplay. The NFT may then be transferred to someone else who can resume the game.
There are already technologies in the making that will allow people to modify NFTs. They can change their visual when a certain event happens or change traits as well. Another thing that is interesting to explore are self-destroying NFTs.
As you can see, using NFTs to enhance gameplay and provide unique benefits is an interesting concept. But Sony’s implementation of this technology in a fair and equitable manner remains to be seen. New technology needs the right implementation. Gaming companies have to think about their existing player base.
Nonetheless, the potential benefits of the NFTs in gaming are numerous. and it will be exciting to see how Sony’s new patent plays out in the future.
